In case I never mentioned it before, I love green smoothies! They are fast, they are tasty, and when done in a health conscious way, they are a great way to get nutrients into the body. Adding a quality protein powder to the mix also allows you to turn your green smoothie into a supplement snack to have in between your real meals, or to provide you with a satiating protein fix immediately after your workouts when you want an alternative to a protein bar. I love my Strawberry Protein Green Smoothie recipe because it checks all those boxes and more.
This recipe combines kale, spinach, cucumbers, apple slices and strawberries with quality whey protein to create one of my favorite smoothies to drink. To truly make this a healthy smoothie worthy of any fitness enthusiast, I had to make sure that I was incredibly cognizant of the amount of fruit that went into the drink. Remember fruit, especially berries, contain a large amount of sugar. Even though it is natural, fruit sugar (fructose/glucose) is still a form of sugar and so you should always try to keep it at a minimum when considering a healthy meal. Keeping that in mind, I’d say that this is a recipe you can really feel good about.
As with most green smoothies the prep time is quick and straightforward. To make it even faster I always use pre-washed leafy greens. It makes things so much easier, whether you are making a smoothie or a quick salad for lunch.
Just add the following ingredients into a high-powered blender in the order listed…water, cucumber, Honeycrisp or Fuji apple slices, frozen whole strawberries, Splenda, kale, spinach, and ice cubes. Blend all of the ingredients together until pureed.
Remove the blender top and add the protein powder to the mixture. Pulse the protein 3 or 4 times in the blender until the protein is just combined. (I don’t like to over-blend the protein because it tends to get frothy.)
My favorite protein to use in this recipe (and in general) is BPI Sports Whey HD. It has a great consistency and blends flawlessly with everything. The flavor that I get is Vanilla Caramel and it goes well with everything from food to smoothies to even water. (I especially love it in my Blueberry Protein Pancakes with Gluten Free Option recipe.) This brand can be found at Vitamin Shoppe or on Bodybuilding.com. Please note that for people with a high gluten sensitivity, this protein DOES HAVE A DISCLAIMER that it is made in a facility that also processes wheat. Please use another protein if that is a problem.
Note: If you use an unflavored protein, you may need to add more sweetener to the smoothie since you no longer will be getting any flavor from the protein powder.
That’s all you have to do! Just pour and enjoy. This recipe will make a 32 ounce smoothie.
- ¾ cup water
- ½ large English cucumber, roughly chopped
- ½ medium Honeycrisp or Fuji apple, seeded and roughly chopped
- 1 cup large frozen whole strawberries
- ½ tablespoon Splenda
- 1 cup kale
- 1 cup spinach
- 1½ cups ice cubes
- 1-1½ scoops quality protein powder (BPI Sports Whey HD)
- Place the water, cucumber, apple slices, strawberries, Splenda, kale, spinach and ice cubes (in the order listed) into a high-powered blender
- Blend until pureed
- Add protein powder and pulse 3-4 times until just combined
- Pour and serve cold
